| May Update |
| May 15th, 2008 |
| Dear Friends, |
| May is well under way, and so is the reenacting season! I'm so sorry I wasn't able to make it to the drill at Fort Ontario, it was a splendid weekend, and I have heard glowing reports. I DID get to Elmira, and it was wonderful to see so many of our folks there, and have a chance to visit with some others who we miss all winter. A nice event in spite of wet evenings, and we know who had the best looking company on the field! I didn't get around to see folks in camp at Letchworth last weekend due to the foul weather, but it was nice to see everyone who stopped to visit at Sutler's Row! |
| Memorial Day Events: |
| There are a number of possibilities to choose from this year. Please do try to honor our veterans by participating in one or more of them! |
Sunday May 25 - Newark Memorial Day Parade - Line up at 1pm at the hotel on Rt. 88 and West Shore
Blvd. The parade begins at 1:30, with a ceremony at 2pm. |
After the parade in Newark, you are cordially invited to my house for a Memorial Day picnic. This year
we will also be celebrating my husband Dave's college graduation. Bring your lawn chairs and a dish to pass, and
join us about 4pm! RSVP to me at 315-398-0443, ASAP, so we have enough burgers and hot dogs! If you want to bring
your own beverages, you may. We will provide lemonade. |
Monday May 26 - We have again been invited by Lincoln Camp of the SUVCW to participate in their
ceremonies in Rochester. I received the following from Jim Walzer: "This year, for the fourth time, we will hold
ceremonies at three locations in Rochester on Monday, May 26, 2008: Holy Sepulchre GAR Plot (9:30 am), Rapids
Cemetery (10:45) Mount Hope GAR Plot (11:30). We hope to have a good turnout like last year." |
For the last couple of years, the ceremonies were followed by a 'picnic on the green' at the GAR plot at
Mt.Hope. Bring your lunch and beverage and a blanket to spread, or chairs, if you wish to join us! |
Monday May 26 - Nunda, NY, Memorial Day celebration as part of Nunda's Bicentennial. This is a
great opportunity for the 28th, as we have a member of the 28th buried in the cemetery there; William H Bradley who
enlisted as a drummer in company F at age 15, the youngest known member of the regiment. Let's have a good turnout
for this one! Gather at noon to be prepared for the ceremony which begins at 1. If we would like to lay a wreath
at the monument for our soldier of the 28th, we need to let Todd Shillington know. After the ceremony, there will
be a walk around the cemetery, followed by a presentation about Medal of Honor recipient John Carter in the GAR hall
that he built. The Historical Society has offered to feed participants who will march in the 6pm parade. Civil
War participants will be at the front of the parade, (which will be about ½ mile) directly behind the members of
the American Legion. A number of our folks have already expressed an interest in attending. If you would like to
join us, please let Kathy know, so that we can give Todd an approximate number. |

| Additional Update |
| May 27th, 2008 |
| Hi folks... I have some additions for the May update. |
| Cedar Creek... If anyone is interested in going this year, please let Simon know soon. He's handling the registrations for this and will send you a copy. There is an earlybird deadline and the price goes up quickly after that. |
| Guyandotte, W.Va. (Oct 31-Nov 2). Myself, Terry Parker, and possibly one or two of his guys are going. We plan on carpooling as Terry P. has access to a vehicle that will hold several people. More people make it cheaper. |
| I went to this a couple years ago. The locals roll out the red carpet for the troops and the municipal support is incredible- with most meals free. Dunno if they're still doing it, but 3 years ago they even threw in a free (to re-enactors) paddlewheel boat excursion on the Ohio River. The battle is a street fight right in the village, where there was a 2-day fight during the war. |
| If you are interested, please let me know. I'm handling the registration for this one. |
